Laparoscopic bile duct ultrasound - practice guidelines

Laparoscopic biliary ultrasound should be considered as sensitive and specific for the presence of common bile duct stones as other modalities- on table x-ray cholangiogram/MRCP and endoscopic ultrasound

New laparoscopic biliary ultrasound providers should attend an accreditation course and mentorship as part of good medical practice unless mentored by consultant colleague or part of fellowship in a high-volume unit (>100/year)

Annual audit of outcomes

The gold standard of practice is to formally sterilise ultrasound probes between patients. If an aseptic cleaning and sheathing protocol is used use between patients, it should be agreed with hospitals infection control department

Standards of performance positive and negative predictive values should be >95%
